I believe that many of our problems and patterns of behaviour stem from hurts that we experienced in our pasts. To overcome the challenges of today, we need to examine our pasts and discover the experiences that hurt us, then work to heal.  Some experiences that may have hurt you include:

  • Trauma
  • Abuse (Sexual, Physical, Mental/Emotional)
  • Neglect/ Abandonment
  • Dysfunctional family (rigid, uncommunicative, lacking in structure, drug/alcohol abuse, and more)
  • Bullying


I can help you work through your feelings about these experiences, and help you to recognize the effect that they have had on your life. Once you have acknowledged the hurt from your past and how it has affected you today, you can make changes. Through my own personal experience and my work as a counsellor, I have found that there are four principles that underlie the process of change. I have developed my method, The S.T.A.R. system, from these principles.

The STAR system

S - Self-reliance: Emotional self-reliance and the ability to meet our emotional needs ourselves.
T - Transformation: Transforming the way we think and feel about ourselves and the experiences we have had.
A - Action: Taking action to change our behaviours and move forward making different, healthier choices.
R - Results: Happiness, a better outlook on life, better relationships, and a healthier emotional state.
